If it is an author I know and love, never - spot the book, buy the book.
Others, if the description isn't enough to hook me, yes, I do want to read a bit of it. Some authors, I just can't stand their style, so no matter how good the story is, I can't get into it. I like to get a feel for that sort of thing, if the book looks interesting.
