custom screensavers aren't available (yet, unless something changed in the last day and I missed it). Check back occasionally; the devs are working on it. However, note that by design, the devs do not work out a way to replace the screensavers if on purpose you have the Special Offers kindle. That is part of the bargain you made for paying less for the device: you get the SO screens. Just check back once screensaver customization is working for the non-SO devices, and see what your options are. (probably pay the $ on your manage your kindle page @amazon, +a jailbreak, +an update).
as for position in a book; from inside the book, if you go to menu, at the bottom you'll see a bit of a progress bar. You'll get used to estimating where you are at. At the home screen (where you see book titles), there will also be a bit of a progress bar per title underneath each title.
