A broken screen substrate (which, from the description, is what's happened to you) is not covered by the warranty; it's something that you've done to your Kindle. You've banged it, dropped it, put something heavy on the screen, etc. Probably not at the time that the problem actually showed up - it could have been a while before.

Amazon are absolutely in the right here.
