Higher degrees prove a principle, the trend of knowing more and more about less and less. At one time I knew EVERYTHING about personal computers. Today I have vastly more knowledge, but about a very narrowly defined field.
New college students study many subjects, broadly, and then study more and more deeply fewer and fewer subjects, until they end up writing a dissertation proving they know everything about single thing.
