Any gun meant to be fired using one hand is a pistol. A revolver has a cylinder that revolves each time the trigger is pulled, placing an unfired round under the hammer. A semiautomatic pistol has a magazine and uses the energy of the fired round to load the next round. This can be done mechanically or gas driven.
