I have the Sony software, ADE, a Nook Color and a Mac so maybe I can help. I also use ADE to transfer library books to my Nook Color. Here is what works for me. My Mac still runs Leopard (10.5.8), and I am not sure which OS X version you use and how the commands might vary.

The ACSM file should be in your Downloads folder. Click on the file to highlight it (not to open it). Then select Cmd-I to open the Info window. In the Info window scroll down and you will see an "Open With" section. Click the drop-down box to show a list of programs which are compatible with the ACSM file. You should see Adobe Digital Editions in the list along with the Sony software. Underneath the drop-down box is an icon that says "Change All...". If you click that icon, then it will make ADE the default program to open all of your ACSM files. So from that point on the ACSM files will open in ADE rather than import into the Sony software.
