I installed the iLiad Companion Software, but when I connect the iLiad to the computer, the window where I’m supposed to provide a name for my iLiad does not appear. After Windows tries to install the USB Mass Storage device, it tells me that the hardware could not be installed / it may not work properly. Whenever I connect or disconnect iLiad’s USB cable, Windows makes that sound (the same sound that it makes when I connect or disconnect a USB memory stick); but nothing happens, no drive in “My Computer”.

What OS are you running? I've seen some people have trouble getting Vista to recognize the iLiad as a USB device. I don't have a link, but I saw somewhere in another thread a link to a hotfix from Microsoft that fixed an issue with Vista and USB devices.

I wanted to install the Companion mainly to 1) access the iLiad via my PC and put PDFs on its internal memory, and 2) to be able to see the scribbled PDFs on my PC (i.e., to merge the scribbles with the PDFs). Does anyone know about alternative softwares that can do either and are reliable?

Technically, you don't need the Companion software to do either of those things. Once you get the USB figured out, you can just drag/drop files to the iLiad when it's recognized as a USB device.
It's a little more difficult, but you can also setup a shared network directory by yourself on your PC and then configure the iLiad with the right username/password/workgroup/directory and it'll sync with the PC via wired/wireless ethernet. The only thing the Companion does is automate the configuration on the PC side, you can do it yourself if you have some experience setting up network sharing.
