Utilizing public library/software question

I had a Sony e-reader and the reader library software - switched to the Nook and downloaded Adobe Digital Editions. When I download an e-book from the public library I select the Adobe EPub version and it downloads as a .ascm file. When opening it, it automatically uses the Reader Library software, not the ADE. Minor annoyance - I can import it into ADE and then download to the Nook. However, ADE isn't recognizing them as "borrowed" and I can't return them early, which I'd really like to do. While it seems obvious that the solution is to delete the Reader Library software sometimes the obvious is wrong and I don't want to screw up my ebook library by accident. Has anyone done this? Had this problem? I use a Macbook, btw.

Thanks in advance.
