I don't like to add up my book purchases--I did one year and the total scared me!--but I would guesstimate that I spent about the same.

On the one hand, I format-shifted a lot of books because this was my first year with an e-reader and I wanted to downsize my paper library, so that was added expense, plus I bought books that I would have passed on before, because now I have no physical space limitations stopping me from sampling new authors--again, added expense.

But on the other hand, a lot of books I would have previously bought in hardcover were cheaper as e-books, so I've saved money there, and I've used the public library, which I never did for paper books.
