Please don't compare with Apple. Apple is one of its kind, it can sell products at 40+% profit margin, and people are still lining up to snap up anything on the shelf. For the rest of the world, they have to compete on price.

That's why Kindle is sold at a loss (that's negative profit margin); and Amazon has the advantage of earning your money back from its proprietary format ebooks and other products.
