On the other hand... Canon's imageFORMULA DR-2020U Universal Workgroup Scanner can be had for under $600, if you're okay with scanning 20 pages per minute. (And if you're okay with either cutting up your original book or photocopying it to letter size, a step I recommend anyway for maximum character recognition.)
