I'm not sure why raid is so important. If you have enough storage to meet your needs on one drive? I still can't see spending $500 even if he does have some drives. Put the drives in your current PC and back up to them... why add $500 to the cost.

What's so unsecure about S3? BTW: If you use Jungle Disk everything is 100% encrypted by your PC before it is sent to the S3 data center.
