Most of us have not had problems with our screens. But most of us also take precaution when carrying an e-reader around. I always have mine in a sturdy case with a band to make sure it keeps shut. Most readers don't come with a band, but I always put one on.
On my first Kindle & my first Nook I had extended warranties. My old readers will be long gone before I could use up the warranty. (I gift mine to others when I get a new one). I'm not saying it is a bad idea to get insurance if you carry your reader in a purse or book bag without proper protection (more than a simple cover). And I'm not saying something could never happen. But insurance does bet it won't, and most of us are glad we have it if we need it. So it is a personal decision whether to get it or not.
