Seriously! A loose object lodges between the cover and screen. Pressure on the cover then forces the object into the screen and cracks it.

Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it won't happen to someone else.

I've read a few reports where screens have cracked because of the above scenario. Another instance happened when an ereader without a cover was placed inside a padded neoprene sleeve and then into a book bag. Protected? No, because the corner of a book pushed into the sleeve and cracked the screen.
