These two competing technologies in terms of data transfer to mobile devices, that is mobile carriers and wifi-wimax standards, translate to pretty much every mobile device not just ebooks, and here we got just another example. I don't know the inside scoop of the whole thing but it's pretty obvious that there's going to be a struggle in terms of wifi and mobile ips and networks such as evdo. And I am sure evdo is glad to offer an infrastructure to amazon, and amazon their clout, like another poster said, if they are to be the de facto provider of a bestselling device.
Much more complicated with irex of course as other posters have said, but for me the issue of actually getting some decent mobile content on the iliad is not the carrier tec, wifi or mobile, itself but the content providers. If a couple of bestselling newspapers get behind it in a few countries they are going to make the wifi functional and not merely decoratory in a matter of days, or even add mobile carrier connectivity if they so choose to deliver their media this way.
