Converting between different eBook format (to/from ePub/Mobi) is pretty straightforward.
From PDf... well that's a hit and miss, in my experience.
I too prefer to read English originals in English, but I read a lot of Scandinavian books as well.

(Especially this time of year when my brain is somewhat slower than normal. Finished one of Unni Lindell's books a few minutes ago. Would have liked to read it in Norwegian, but the Swedish translation was easier to get hold of. They are so easy to check out from the Swedish eLibrary. I don't know if you've got it equally easy in Norway though.)
