Tablets are coming down and are the right solution for complex pdfs. But I wouldn't want to read a long book on LCD.

If you know what you are doing, you can make pdfs reasonably viewable on a 6" e-ink screen.

The Sony is probably the best bet because it is Android and rootable, so you should be able to customize the software to a huge extent. The Sony has had crash problems, but Sony have stated they will release an update soon to fix it.

The Nook is also Android and rootable, but I know less about it.
