The other thing that I find gives washed out text is if you leave your screen refresh at the default "every 6 pages". I know there are lots of people who have no problem with that, but to me after the 1st page it tends to get a little washed out/fuzzy. Could be specific fonts are better at longer refresh. Try lowering this if you still have it at 6.
