This has been one of the most helpful threads, I found most of what I needed but I still kept running into the android market wall. Easy and safe access to most of the apps I needed were on the Android Market so I went ahead and rooted my fire. Was pretty easy.
Also, when rooting your fire the first step has you editing a driver, the edited driver works far better for my fire than the native windows driver did. If you have problems connecting your kindle to your PC consider the modified drivers.
