Well, there's "officially user replaceable" and "DIY user replaceable". If my iLiad were out of warranty and I needed a new battery, I would have no problems buying the battery online and opening the iLiad to replace it myself. I've done the same thing on Palms several times.
Officially you're not supposed to do it, but the warranty is already void assuming your original battery lasted longer than a year, and (at least with the Palm) it's really not that difficult to do. I haven't had to do it on my iLiad yet, but that's my plan for when I do. The price iRex charges to replace the battery is ridiculously expensive.
