I personally love my Kobo. I won't defend the customer service (which needs serious work), but they are actively improving the firmware/adding features all the time. If possible get your hands on them and try them out (realizing that most demo models may not have the most current firmware so may lack fixes or new features).

For your notes, Calibre will do a nice job of converting them to e-pub. Haven't done it in a bit, but I think I just saved them as RTF files from Word then converted in Calibre. Very fast and easy process that should work well on Sony or Kobo. I would assume it could likely convert it Mobi for a Kindle but I can't say for sure.
