You seem to think that people are picking on Apple more than Android, but this was in the article that you linked to as well, but I haven't seen people making a big deal of of it either:

Since both no volume and no battery would make a phone useless the two cases seem on the level, but exploding devices make for more interesting stories so I don't see why it would come as a surprise that it receives more attention.
