If you do get a Kindle, I'd get a Keyboard version. The Non-Touch version is okay as a very basic model, though many people report that the screen is not as good as the Keyboard version. I wouldn't touch the Touch version. It seems to have problems.
The Nook is okay.
The Sony-T1 is probably the best built and the best quality. It probably has the best screen. It's had some instability issues, but Sony is releasing a patch addressing it at the end of the month.
I wouldn't bother with a Kobo.
