Note that in a disaster situation the cell phone system *will* be overloaded for days and no one can get through. Text messages have a somewhat better chance of getting through. That said your data plan might still work. Maybe.

Also note that many cell phone towers do not have backup batteries or, if they do, they will only last for a day or so.
