You can set the "blackflash" (screen refresh) back to every page. From the Home screen, hit Menu > Settings > Reading Options and set Page Refresh to On.

Obviously, that won't fix the other problems you mention, but at least one is correctable.

And my own fingers are a distraction with a reading light, so I get that one; I hate shadows and they do cast one. But I'm getting used to that, and for me, it's a minor issue. I've been reading for the last year mostly on the iPad though, so a touch screen is now far more intuitive and "natural" to me.
