Like a lot of features on these new Kindles and covers, it looks to me that they were rushed out a bit too early.
The hard plastic backplate (albeit leather lined on the outside) is just going to trap a lot of heat (esp, when charging). This hard palstic backplate covers up the rear-mounted speakers and muffles the sound at least 50%. Also, short of using a rubber band, there is no way to firmly close the cover. The lighter/thinner top cover does not offer very good protection.
The Amazon K3 cover (lighted or unlighted) is a lot better, as is the unlighted DXG cover imho. Neither of these fully enclose the unit and in the case of the DXG, the speaker holes are located on the bottom edge anyway. The K3 covers have a handy rubber strap and the DXG has magnets that hold it closed. Both covers top/bottom are padded and this helps protect the units.
All this, together with the new greyer background screens. Some persons in Kindle tech services need early Xmas retirement packages imho, lol!
Cheers,
Tom
