This reminds me of "Gargoyles," an excellent animated series. The main characters were all gargoyles who ended up in modern-day New York City due to a magic spell that caused them to be permanently turned to stone until the spell was broken (they are normally stone only during the day). One of the best things about the series is that at certain points it touched on the various mythologies from around the world. Although it's not a major part of the series, there is a element of romance in the series between two of the lead characters, a human detective and a gargoyle.
