After mulling it over for quite some time, I decided that Acer's 7-inch screen is probably a better fit for my needs. It's easier to hold and it has all the ports I want. The drawbacks I've read about didn't seem like deal-breakers for me. I don't think I would have paid $300 for it, but I was happy to pay $190.  I'm new to Android, so this will be "fun."

It seems you were looking at almost the exact same as me. The Transformer looked very nice, especially docked. The Thrive had some good upside but eventually I managed to catch the Acer on the Best Buy site yesterday for $189. I know I'll be using it for a e-reader first and a web browser second, rather have the 7" for my purposes.
The only difference is I looked at the Nook Tablet rather than the Fire I wanted expandability in the tablet. Magazines and comics looked great on it. I hope to have similar or better results on the Iconia.
