You can bypass the credit balance on your account for non-digital items, as long as you go through the regular checkout process and don't use one-click buying. When you get to your cart, just click to change the payment type, and uncheck the box to use your credit balance. It's only if you're using the one-click buying (which is, of course, your only option for digital purchases) that you're forced to use any existing credit balance.
