It depends on the class.

If the textbook has a lot of images and graphs in it, a textbook may still be a better bet at this point in time. If he's set on an reader and he has books like this, he may want to consider an ereader with a bigger screen, like the Pocketbook 902 or the Kindle DX. If color may be important, consider the Fire, Kobo Vox, or Nook Color.

If it's straight words, and regular 6-inch ereader may be a good substitute. Most ereaders can highlight, take notes, bookmark, etc. I have a Kobo Touch and I plan to use it for some of my classes.
