My guess is, that ghosting and contrast depends on how good the display driver / circuit is calibrated to the display characteristics. Also, surrounding temperature seems to affect display characteristics and the driving circuit seems to take temperature into account.
So, maybe this can be tweaked!
At least, B&N managed to improve contrast of their Nook Simple Touch via firmware update....
