From your preferences, you might try The Saint by Leslie Charteris or Ed McBain 49th precinct. And Jack Higgins is always a good read.

Raymond Chandler is classic, and for something different try Robert B. Parker Westerns. Totally cut and dried, but a very good read.

Can't go wrong with Elmore Leonard or Robert Crais either IMO
