name recognition based on $200 million dollar marketing campaigns, the hangers-on who simply buy something because its popular and the sheer momentum of "hey i liked it last year..."
in my case i was on the fence, i knew what mw3 was all about and bf3 was the "scary" unknown property. i'm very glad i got the urge for something different this year. until call of duty ceases being the same exact game year after year, i'll continue supporting battlefield (unless they fall into a rut as well).
