I think the small form factor helps in keeping the reader from bending/twisting.
I agree with you on the Sony being sturdy. I have a 505 that's in the brown leather cover and it's been dropped, left in my bag for ages and flung around in there with all of my other entranclements and it's still in pretty much as new condition.
I also totally think you've made a great point in your last sentence.
