Don't discount the idea of spending a bit more to get a model that has 3G coverage. Your chances of being able to quickly get a new book while in the middle of nowhere are remarkably good with 3G, a great deal less with WiFi only.
Another consideration is the support policy of the reader you buy. IF something bad happens to it, you want a company that has an excellent reputation for standing behind their product. Amazon is clearly the leader here.
I agree with Harry -- a good case is the single best protection you can buy.
