My recommendation is a cheap, quality ereader with a sturdy case and neoprene slip cover combo to put it in. That way if something happens to it, you're not out big bucks.

If you're in the US, a new Nook Touch can be had right now for $69 at Target ($99 + $30 GC). And on Black Friday, you might be able to get either a Kindle Touch for $79 at Staples ($99 + $20 GC) or a Kindle NT for $64 also at Staples ($79 + $15 GC).
