Ereaders aren't for everyone. Many people don't read.
I love mine, and my 86 year old mother loves hers.
I think you are lucky to have a caring person offer you a choice, but maybe it would have been better if they just bought you one.
Still refusing the offer and negotiating something different is a tad tacky.
Returning it if you hate it after giving it a fair try it is IMO, not nearly as bad.
