Kobo Vox E-Reader

I just bought a Kobo Vox E-Reader in Toronto, Canada for my wife who is a keen reader. Trying to setup the device was very frustrating. The instructions do not match what shows up on the screen. It was not possible to change the font size of the free sample books provided, except for the instructions. The device only had one native format, ePub. After a very frustrating time with telephone and email help, the device is being returned. We thought that the Vox would be very convenient for downloading books from the local library. Since the e-books available from the library are very limited, there was not a single e-book available for immediate download. Typical waiting lists were in the 50-60 range. It looks look the publishing industry has gone overboard in its protectionist efforts. A friend sent us a book in Mobi format and I converted it into pdf and ePub. The pdf version showed up well on our computer. However on the Vox only the cover page showed up, the rest was a series of pink lines.
