I don't see the clutter problem at all. I have bookmarks to the calibre forum, Sigil and Moderators, and I use those bookmarks almost exclusively. I seldom ever look at the list of forums, so new posts in other forums are never seen by me (unless I've posted in them). Clicking one of my direct links shows me all new posts in forums I'm interested in. Checking my CP page (to which I have another direct link) gives me a list of all threads I've posted into that have new posts since I read that thread (that's better than since I last visited MR, as I may read some threads during a visit, but not all). (I have "subscribe automatically to threads I post in" turned on.)

My normal procedure is quite simple - I check CP for threads I've worked on, then check the forums of interest via my bookmarks. All bold threads are threads I have not posted in, that have new posts since my last visit to the thread list for that forum. I read what I want, which unbolds the thread, then mark the forum read.
