Loses popular highlights ability

I downloaded a book (pride and prejudice) from amazon.co.uk to the kindle, then transfered it to calibre (which removed the drm). Then as a test I removed the book from the device and sent the drm-free version back to the kindle.

The book opens fine, but the popular highlights option is now grayed out, where as the original download had tons of highlights visible (and does again if I delete the book and re-download it from the archive).

I read that removing drm and making meta data edits (such as fixing the title or author or changing cover) would not prevent popular highlights working as it's based on the asin, is this not the case? Or have I got an option incorrectly configured?

The book in the calibre library shows nothing in the ID field after removing the drm, setting it to "isbn:0978787110, amazon_uk:B000JMLFLW" via download metadata likewise does not help, nor does adding "asin:B000JMLFLW" to the list. I've tried converting from mobi to mobi to force the metadata to update and tranfered to the kindle, new metadata is there but again no popular highlights are available.

Is there anyway to adjust metadata of a purchased kindle book and still see popular highlights? If there is, any idea why it's not working for me?

Edit: In addition I've noticed that when the drm-free version of the book is on the device, the drm'd version still appears in the archive. It seems whatever the kindle used to identify the book (asin?) has been lost during the meta update?
