I agree - the Kobo is not unique in having some bugs.
I gave my original Kobo to my daughter when I upgraded to the Touch. Not sure what happened to it (my daughter totally denies responsibility!) but the screen broke.
Luckily I could replace it under my home insurance policy but the original Kobo no longer exists and this happened during the months between the Touch's release in North America and it's appearance in Australia.
I was all set to get the Sony PRS T1 (I had also considered and rejected the Kindle) and started reading the Sony forum to learn about it. I was disappointed to read of freezing issues and an apparent lack of response from Sony customer service.
By fortunate timing my insurance claim was approved the same week Kobos became readily available in Australia and so I had to make a choice between the Sony and the Kobo.
I decided to stay with "the devil I knew" and purchased a second Touch. Part of me still wishes I had the PRS T1 (it seems like a really nice ereader) but I thought my little brain is getting too old to deal with another set of potential difficulties.
I am very happy with my two Touches. I've certainly had some issues and I wish the response from Kobo customer care had been better but I doubt I would have been any happier with any other device - I would just be having a different set of problems.
