I'd say yes, we are doomed to LCD or whatever else technology will be used in tablets or whatever you call the multi-purpose devices.
eInk likely will die together with eReaders, if they don't evolve fast. And from what I gather here, the majority (vocal minority?) doesn't want them to be anything more than text-displaying-devices.
Once tablet prices drop to those of cheap eReaders AND have good LC-Displays, I don't think there are many who will spend the money on a device as limited as an eReader.
I'm not sure if I'd buy an eReader today, if I were to start off new and now know the advantage of eInk.
So, yes, the display is important - but a good LC-Display is often good enough and the fact that it can do a thousand things more will be an incentive for many to buy it, instead of an eInk-Device that is artificially kept low and single-purposed.

I'll admit I don't know too much about all the various eInk devices, but I'm sure I'd have heard of it if there were an eInk Device that is as multi-purposed as an Android device.
