CJ Cherryh - The Morgaine Chronicles

Ursula K. Le Guin - the Earthsea novels (fantasy)
Ursula K. Le Guin - The Left Hand of Darkness (brilliant sci-fi, though a little dated now. come on this is where the Ansible concept came from!)

And speaking of the Ansible:
Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game (and other novels in that setting)
...don't think I saw ^^^^ mentioned already.
