Nook Tablet Registration Question

It may be too early for anyone to know the answer to this question but: Is it possible to use the new Nook tablet without registering it? I am interested in purchasing the new Nook table but not if registration is mandatory. I do not need access to the B&N bookstore at all. If I understand it correctly, using an unregistered device has complete functionality with the exception of B&N bookstore access and automatic software updates. Is that accurate? Has anyone used the “skip out of box experience” button combination on the new tablet yet? My local B&N just got them in stock and I will purchase with cash, no CC being used. Any feedback is appreciated!
