It is one of the most majestic things I ever saw...
Walking through the Giant Sequoias in California was impressive. But ALL the trees were huge. Seeing this grove, surrounded by 'normal size' trees really made a statement. They simply
TOWERED over the Maples and Beeches around them. The owner has the grove roped off so even we weren't allowed closer than 25 feet to the trees (to prevent soil compaction around the roots) but it was close enough to get the full impact. I can only imagine what a full forest of them must have been like....
Most people never realized that the trees they see are rather young, perhaps 50-100 years for the north-east part of the US, even younger in heavily logged areas. Trees for paper are planted then harvested at 3-5 years old, which is why we aren't saving anything by using plastic bags. In fact, we are depleting our oil supply by making the plastic bags, which isn't renewable. We can thank the Oil Cartels and Media for spreading the wrong information.
