Hey Scion, I was reading the Fires User Guide while waiting for my Fire to be delivered and found that there is a text view for the magazines, the user guide states to simply tap the text view button on the top of the screen.

I guess the reviewer didn't read the user guide before he reviewed the Fire and just over looked the button. It does state the text button is only available for articles and not advertisements.

You can also adjust the font, style, typeface and color mode by tapping the middle of the screen to bring up the Options bar, then tap the Text icon Aa.

Seems like the reviewer missed a lot.
