You need to create an Amazon USA account with a US address. Register the Kindle. Use your Australian CC to buy US Amazon gift cards. The gift card will be used by Kindle for orders.

If you purchase or download via WiFi, you have no issues. If you use 3G, you can get hit for wireless charges for anything ihat isn't a book bought from Amazon. But books are a non-issue regardless of 3g or WiFi.
