I don't use a Sony, but "authorizing" is never required for calibre. "Authorizing" is a DRM related issue . If you buy DRM'd books, you'll need to use "Authorized software or ereader to get the book. You can then use calibre to handle it.

Most people suggest you try to avoid DRM books, If you can't completely avoid them many will strip the DRM (using tools not discussed in detail here). Calibre can send DRM'd books to/from ereaders, but can't do much else with them (can't convert to another format or change metadata.)
