That's how we do it as well, but only because we have a really big family dinner on christmas day (the entire family is there, about 50 people). Exchanging gifts in front of all those people takes away some of the joy of opening presents.

I always spend Christmas at my parents house and New Years eve with friends. We usually eat something that's relatively easy to make, like cheese plate or fondue. We'd rather spend lots of time talking and playing games instead of cooking the whole evening.
