In which case, a thrifty person's cropping tool could be PDF Scissors. OK, not perfect when the ebook has a mix of columns, like single-column pages and two-column pages. But free is good. And you can dice and slice columns to make small print larger, like chopping up a two-column source PDF's page into four output pages.
